My Office-Cubicle Browsing
After what seems like forever my Director ( or as I call her my current tormentor) has reduced the amount of work sent my way. For almost three months I was her "yes person". Anything that needs to be done including booking cabs, getting conference rooms, getting chorus calls fixed up to finally making notes for her to talk, I think I might be able to compete for the a montage video of sudden I see (obviously the parody version) from Devil Wears Prada.
As always I digress this is not the time and place to air grievances (haha) but I am here for a different reason today. I spent the whole of yesterday reading random articles on The Atlantic, Salon from the way of LinkedIn and went around spamming everyone's inbox. But I dint have time to dissect it at length what with S's new job, my fight with K and P's better half's arrival in Mumbai. So I thought why not write about it :) Here's some of those pearls of wisdom that I have learnt yesterday:
"Since 2009, a group of women at Arizona State University have devoted themselves to resuscitating gentlemanly behavior and chivalry on a campus. Every spring for the past three years, these women have gathered for the "Gentlemen's Showcase" to honor men who have acted chivalrously by, for example, opening the door for a woman or digging a woman's car out of several feet of snow.
The event has spread to campuses nationwide. Its goal is "to encourage mutual respect between the sexes," Karin Agness tells me in an interview. Agness is the founder and president of the Network of Enlightened Women, the organization that hosts Gentlemen's Showcases at colleges each spring."
I didn't know how to react to the above news because for me, chivalry doesn't exist in real life. Of course we do find remnants of it sometimes in books or TV but I think at least in this country its truly dead for better or for worse. Its the simple truth and I don't think any number of talks/workshops is going to change this state.
What do you think? Do comment.
Moving on, I have been typing a lot of cover letters the past week after an insane day at office and when I came across these gems I couldn't not post em. I am really bad at writing cover letters, I don't like validating myself, re-thinking every single word a hundred times, to some random person out there who might read it for two seconds before moving on to the next mail. And lets not start with the resume, which took about three weeks and n reviews for me to come up with the current one.
And this is how the job listing looks like before you ask:
The next article was out of HBR, I know I never in my two years in IIML went onto that website voluntarily just to read stuff. I guess people change or rather LinkedIn changes them. Its called "The Disciplined Pursuit of Less".
The gist of the article is that:
1. There are too many things distracting people from their actual interests
2. Remove the distractions and get more clarity
Which basically means that I am going to have to spring clean my whole life starting from my closet. I guess I do have too many distractions like:
Is dexter getting arrested, Nooo!" or "OMG this playlist on 8tracks is so awesome, have to make one of my own (spend next two hours connecting old hard disks to find all those songs)" or "OMG that's such a cool app, must have it now (uninstall it after two days of fiddling around)" or "I need to find mobi versions of all the books that I like, spend the whole weekend trolling around torrent sites to download stuff which I am pretty sure I am not going to re-read" or "Must make pasta from scratch because that's how its supposed to be eaten". I can go on.
So yesterday was eventful.
P.S. I found all these pictures from this awesome website: fuckiminmy20s.tumblr.com, do check it out.
