My Review: Bankster
After a long radio silence from Blogadda I finally got hands
on their second book: Bankster. The author personally
autographed it! My first autographed book and I totally fell for the gesture. I so
wanted the book to be good :)
I am very skeptical about the whole contemporary Indian authors because it is really really difficult to find the good ones from the lot. I found one good book out of the last twenty. So the odds were already stacked pretty high for this one. But, I would say one thing: it definitely is a page turner once you get used to the story and the best part there was not much usage of heavy handed banking lingo anywhere which is a good thing for me.

The author did not even give me a moment to pace myself it
was globe-trotting from the get go, moving from one exotic location to another,
it felt like a Bond movie till it moved to the Mumbai part and then it fell
apart. I dint know what happened, did the author outsource it someone else? The
writing style changed and so did the depth of the characters.
I like reading thrillers it’s a nice puzzle laid out for you
to figure things out and in this case the author was able to build it up pretty
well. It did get a bit monotonous at time and sometimes it was predictable but
it was able to hold my interest till the end and that’s what matters right? I
felt that the end was slightly more rushed and I kinda understand the need to
tie all the stories together in a nice little bow, it could have been
better.
The one thing that felt a phony about this book was its
characters. There was no effort to build them up. I couldn't connect with a
single one. I mean you should at least be able to be on the hero’s side right? This
absolutely essential for me, I want to be able to like the people that I am
reading about. I want them to be a little more than card board cut outs. And the clichés! Seriously!
Okay coming to the good parts, it is very difficult for an
author to maintain the readers’ interest throughout the novel and especially in
one where there are so many central characters. And as I got over the initial stage of getting used to style and
the characters the story just moved swiftly that I couldn’t put it down till I
was done. The writing style is succinct and enjoyable.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised, the book outdid all
expectations. It is very interesting to read. It’s good for a long train ride or
a weekend stay. You wouldn’t be bored and if you love thrillers, you should definitely
try this one out.
